Sihl – The Coating Company, Germany

The roots of Sihl date back over 500 years, with the first reference being “the old paper mill on the Island” in Zürich. Founded in 1935, taking its name from a river in Zürich, the Sihl corporation had the perfect site for a mechanical paper factory.

Until 1989, Sihl produced lightweight thermal paper for fax and POS in Berlin. At that time, many of the large companies – Jujo, Kanzan, Koehler, Mitsubishi, Hansol – began to produce POS paper. In 1990 Sihl merged with Renkers GmbH, a production plant located in Düren bringing more than 100 years of coating experience with them.

In order to make their work more efficient, they relocated to Duren and turned their production towards a niche market to provide laminated surfaces with new properties by coating and laminating high quality paper, films and textiles, offering a wide range of products ranging from thermal papers, tags, packaging materials, self-adhesive products, coated paper and films for industrial use and large media formats for inkjet or laser printing.

Originally formed in 1945, Multitec AG, the production plant in Bern, was integrated into the Sihl Group in 1991. Sihl Düren (formerly Renkers) and Sihl Bern (formerly Multitec) form the Sihl Group. Since November 2003, Sihl is an active part of the Italian Diatec Group. Since July 2016, Sihl has Equistone, a capital-strong and experienced middle-market Investor, by its side.
